#StyleTip: Tips and Tricks for Mixing Different Furniture Styles

Even most people who love a particular furniture style above all others will still have multiple furniture styles in their home. I think that’s what makes your house a home – your personal touch, how you mix and match what you love. That’s what makes your home unique to you and your personal style.

My own home is very eclectic. I have family heirlooms, personal things that I’ve collected in all the moves that we’ve made, a wide variety of styles. But I think it all goes together because even though they’re all different, they are all things that I love. Everybody has those different things that they love. All they need to do is figure out how to make everything work together. If you’re not sure how to make the things you love work together, this post is for you. I’m going to share some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years for mixing different furniture styles together.

Placement in the room

The first thing I would look at if you want to mix furniture styles is where you plan to place them in the room and how close they are going to be together. This makes a big difference. If they’re on opposite sides of the room, they would probably blend better than being right next to each other.

Some styles work better together than others

Certain furniture styles are very easy to mix. You can use Asian pieces with pretty much anything, Also, an antique piece is something you can use with any style, it doesn’t matter. An antique just gives your room that unique flavor and I think it makes for a good conversation piece. Although, I think any styles can be mixed together, there are some that don’t go match up as well as others. If you put contemporary and rustic together, for instance, I don’t think those go together quite as well. Or putting something super traditional, like 18th century, and rustic – that’s a lot harder to mix. It can work, but you have to be a lot more careful in how you do it.

Focus on the colors

One of the keys to mixing just about any furniture styles together, is making sure the colors work well together. The easy way to do this is to have your main color scheme focus on two or three complimentary colors. If you’re using upholstery or rugs or accessories to tie everything together, make sure those two to three colors are in each of them. Having these colors represented throughout the room will go a long way towards helping tie together the different styles.

Think about the finishes

One thing to consider, when mixing multiple furniture styles, is whether you’re going to keep it in the natural finish or are you going to paint it. Painting it is going to change the total feel of that piece. A lot of people are taking old pieces or antique pieces and they’re painting them, which updates it and makes it unique. This works especially well if the piece has clean lines. Painting it will give a different feel for your room. And, if you’re mixing three or more furniture styles, painting one will help it blend with the rest.

Size matters

When you’re mixing multiple furniture styles, don’t make them all big pieces. You don’t want each one to be a big, huge focal point. Make one a big piece, another a small piece and a medium piece. Maybe even one style is just an accent piece. Just don’t make them all monster pieces. Mix up the sizes and you can pull off lots of different styles. As I’ve mentioned, y own house is very eclectic, but it’s not all big pieces and that’s a big part of what makes it work.

Use your accessories to really mix it up

Your accessories can be just the trick to be a little funky with your home décor. Don’t be afraid to go a little out there with them. Do a shag rug with the antiques. Or choose artwork that’s very contemporary and mix it with more traditional style furnishings. You can also use your accessories to tie everything together nicely. For instance you can use the same pillows on two or three different styles of sofa and chairs to tie them all together. Those are just a few tips you can use to mix and match different furniture styles in your home. Go ahead and experiment, see what works for you.
