How to make your master bedroom a personal haven

How to make your master bedroom a personal haven

Your master bedroom is your personal space where you should feel at home and at ease. The decor you use to create your room will determine the success you have at transforming it into a cozy escape where you can sit back and relax at the end of a long day. Use these tips to make your master bedroom the stylish retreat that you deserve.

Add a headboard

If your bed isn't dressed up with a headboard, your room is missing out on a lot of drama and flair that could work wonders at sprucing the area up. The best part about selecting a headboard is that there are so many styles to choose from. If you want your bedroom to give off a coastal, beachy feel, for example, go for a rustic, distressed headboard to contribute to the natural yet elegant atmosphere you've created. On the other end of the spectrum, there are oversized fabric products that cover almost the entire wall for a contemporary feel.

Bring on the texture

Unless you like the minimalist approach to decorating, adding some texture to your space with different materials and patterns is a good idea. Not only will this make the area more visually appealing, but it can also turn a room into a cozy, warm escape. For example, House Beautiful magazine recommended decorating your bed with a combination of velvet pillows, a fur throw blanket and a hemp block print duvet cover. This unique mix of patterns is stimulating and makes the space feel more homey. If you don't want to decorate with such a rich combination of materials, simply incorporating a few patterns and colors with pillows, blankets, rugs and window treatments should work.

"Add curtains to your bed for an extra element of warmth."

Establish personal spaces

Do you share your master bedroom with someone? Make sure that there are areas in your room that you feel are truly yours. Country Living magazine suggested adding curtains to your bed. The extra fabric will bring an element of warmth to the space and you'll have transformed your bed into a private escape where you can read, nap and relax in peace. Sectioning off a corner of the bedroom with a comfortable chair and floor lamp creates a cozy reading nook where you can curl up and enjoy a good book. Try placing it by the window for natural lighting and a view. In another corner, set up a vanity with a small dressing table, chair and mirror. This will clear up space in the bathroom and give you an additional area that makes the bedroom feel more personal.

Introduce some art

One of the most effective ways to decorate a bedroom wall is by creating a photo or art gallery. Depending on how dramatic you want your wall to be, set up anywhere from six to 15 framed paintings or drawings. If you don't have a preferred artist in mind, consider choosing artwork that matches the style of your room. For example, paintings of sea creatures will work flawlessly in a cottage- or beach-style bedroom. Take the same approach if you'd rather hang up a few photos of the family. Choose black and white pictures for an antique look or color photos with large metal frames for a more modern vibe.
