How to store outdoor furniture so it's ready for next year

As summer winds down you're likely steeling yourself against the upcoming cooler weather. You might be getting ready to put away your shorts and tank tops in favor of sweaters and long pants. Your patio furniture also requires attention to make sure it's in good shape for next summer. Try these tips to ready your outdoor furniture for winter:

Clean everything

Remove all those months of dust and dirt by cleaning all your furniture before putting it away for the season. Machine wash cushions and covers if possible, and wipe down everything else with a damp cloth. You'll want to ensure everything is dry before covering it and storing it away. Stashing damp pillows in a humid basement is a recipe for mold, so consider cleaning your patio furniture and cushions a day or two before storing them.

Do repairs

This is a great time to address torn fabric or add an anti-rust product to any metal furniture that is showing signs of use. You may also need to add a coat of paint to wooden furniture that is chipping. Consider adding a polish or wax to your furniture for an extra protecting layer so it's ready for next year.

Make room

While your patio furniture is drying in the sun, take a look at your storage area. It's always better to keep these items inside versus leaving them in the elements during the winter, so consider placing them in your basement, garage or shed. There's no need for heat! Make sure you have enough room for everything before you begin moving all your furniture. It may be helpful to stack chairs or place tables top to top. Place fully-dried cushions in bags to prevent them from gaining a musty smell and keep away the spiders.

Incorporate the inside

Perhaps you have a beautiful patio set that you want to use year-round. If so, can you incorporate it into your interior decor? Those who have a walled in porch may opt to place the set there, or even create seating to the side of your living room or another spacious area.

Prepare for the weather

You may not have enough space to stash your patio furniture inside. That's OK. Stack up the chairs and tables in an area of your yard that has a wind blocker, like right next to the garage. Then, use furniture covers or tarps to keep snow and rain from damaging the furniture. Make sure the tarps are tied down so they won't fray or flap in the wind. Keep an eye on this area throughout the winter to re-tuck the tarps and check for animal activity. A critter might try to make a home on your comfy couch! The key to ensuring your furniture stays in top shape for years to come is to buy high quality items in the first place. Look for options that come with weather sealants, and familiarize yourself with any warranties that you may need to take advantage of.
