Mattress Terms and Buying Guide

Innerspring Mattresses
The most traditional type of mattress set, typically use systems of open coils or metal springs layered between padding. When shopping you'll hear the term coil count. Typically, the higher the count, the more support you'll get.

Pocketed Coil Spring Mattresses
Rather than coils wired together, the innerspring coils are encased in a durable fabric and nestled together to create a mattress. The design allows for the coils to compress individually thus conforming to body contours.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses have been greatly improved from years ago. There are no innersprings used but instead the mattress is essentially a block of foam with softer outer foam layers and an upholstered cover. Latex foam is not sensitive to temperature and is available in many different densities.
Visco-Elastic Foam Mattresses
Also known as memory foam, it conforms to your body shape providing an enveloping feeling of comfort by reducing pressure points and providing natural body alignment. Constructed of high-density polyurethane, memory foam is temperature sensitive and conforms as your body warms it.
Air Controlled Mattresses
These mattresses have air chambers as the primary support. A quality air mattress will mold to body contours. Some models come with adjustable air chambers, which allow you to change your bed's firmness whenever you like.

Decorating tips for the bedroom
What firmness of mattress should I choose?
When shopping for a mattress you'll be introduced to terms like firm, plush and pillow top. Firm isn't the rock-hard firm mattress of years ago. Orthopedic specialists have proven that for true support and proper sleep a mattress needs to have ample "give." So, even today's firm mattresses are comfortable. Plush adds additional layers of surface softness. Pillow Top provides a separate layer of softness that's much like a large flat pillow that is sewn onto the top of the mattress. All of these provide a different feel that can only be truly experienced by completely laying down on the different mattresses. Some mattresses employ a combination of innersprings and Visco-Elastic foam with the foam being a top layer. This provides an even different comfort feel.
What is the difference between a foundation and box springs?
All mattress sets require some form of support underneath. A box spring is literally a box with springs inside to support the mattress. There's a certain amount of "give" to the springs and that adds to the mattress comfort, but also gently supports the mattress. A foundation is essentially a wood box that the mattress sits on top of. These are appropriate for Visco-Elastic mattresses. A foundation is not recommended for an innerspring mattress. When buying a mattress always buy the correct box spring or foundation. Mattresses often wear out because the box spring or foundation wears out. Putting a new mattress on an old box spring or foundation will only ruin the new mattress.
Should I buy a one-sided or a two-sided mattress?
It simply just depends on your preference. Most mattresses today have a sleeping surface on one side only which is very convenient since it does away with the need to flip the mattress periodically. One-sided mattresses still need to be "turned" around on the box spring or foundation. It's easy to ignore this awkward process but it greatly extends the life of your mattress set and ensures much greater comfort. In years past it was more common to have a sleeping surface on two sides. One would flip the mattress to ensure even wearing of the mattress and to readjust the padding materials inside. One would flip one month and flip and turn the mattress the next. The pros of having a two-sided mattress is that the comfort life will be extended since you will only sleep on each side half the amount of time you would on a one-sided mattress. Plus you will have added value knowing you will get your money's worth by extending the life of your mattress.
How to test out mattresses when shopping?
Like Goldilocks, you have to try them out to see which one is just right for you. First of all, don't buy budget when you're buying a mattress. A good mattress will last you 10 to 15 years and will end up costing only pennies a night even at the high end prices. Shop smart, but don't scrimp. When shopping for a mattress wear shoes you can get in an out of easily. Test the mattress like you're going to use it, and spend some time on it to see how it really feels. If you feel silly, just think how silly you're going to feel when you don't sleep comfortably after spending all that money. Note the gauge of the wire as well as the coil count. The smaller the number, the heavier the wire is. Always buy box springs at the same time. They are made to be a set. For the bed to be right, it should yield enough for you to sink slightly, but not too much, into the bed. LIE DOWN on the mattress, preferably with your sleeping partner, before you buy. You're not going to be bouncing up and down on the edge of the mattress when you get home. Choose a mattress with comfort layers made of latex and insulating pad made of coconut fiber. Stay away from wool because wool can grow mold when damp that could trigger asthma problems. An innerspring mattress should be at least nine inches thick.
My spouse likes a different kind of firmness level. How can we find a mattress that works for both of us?
We believe that the better you sleep, the better you will live. At Grand we carry the Kingsdown mattress models that are made to order based on you and your partners preferences. First you try out the Kingsdown test bed where a computer analyzes your body measurements and profile along with statistical data you enter to direct you to the right level of support. These mattresses feature Silent Partner construction with two separate mattress units built into one mattress so you can have one level of support and your partner another level ranging from Ultra Plush to Cushion Firm. This way you both will have the best sleeping experience!
I have allergies. Any suggestions on what mattress I should buy?
Mattress sets do accumulate germs, dust, allergens, moisture and even dead skin cells that we humans naturally give off. For those of us who are joined in bed by a pet there can be additional foreign material added to our mattress set. Even though sheets and blankets are on the bed, these unwanted by-products of life find their way on to the actual surface of the mattress where they can remain permanently. At Grand, many of our mattress models have allergen protection like the Serta Perfect Day models that feature Ultra Fresh antimicrobial protection that keeps your mattress clean and healthy. Sealy SpringFree models have a latex core that is antimicrobial and dust mite resistant. Tempurpedic mattresses have a soft velour cover that is removable and washable and allergen resistant.
